Spiritual Senses – Which one is your strongest?

Rating: Educational

When I began to perceive the spiritual realm, I wasn’t really sure how I “knew” the things I knew. Part of me was convinced that when I sensed something that it was really there and part of me tried to rationalize away the feeling and just dismiss it. We have all probably experienced that.

I learned from Arthur Burk in his series, Nurturing the Spirit, that our soul tends to rationalize away the impressions we get in our spirit because they don’t necessarily make logical sense. For instance, when I was a child and I sensed that there was something scary lurking at the end of the hall or under my bed, my natural eyes could turn on the light and see that there’s nothing there in the visible realm. “See, you’re just making things up!” my mind would tell me. Or as most children are told by adults, “There’s no boogey-man under the bed or in the closet. See?” They open the closet and look under the bed just to convince you. But as soon as they leave, what do you believe if you can still “feel” them in the room? Does it mean you are crazy?

Anyway, during my studies of trying to figure out how this “sensing” the unseen realm stuff works, I came across a book. I can’t recall the title, but the concept has stayed with me. The author suggested that since we have 5 senses in our physical body, perhaps we have 5 senses in our spiritual body. Since that time, I have met people who have experienced the unseen realm through their spiritual senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell or taste. Then there’s that “sixth sense” where you just have an inner knowing, but you can’t exactly explain why. Either your senses are picking something up and your brain comes to a conclusion so quickly that you are not conscious of it or perhaps the Holy Spirit gives you the information through a word of knowledge. Somehow you just know.

Some people who “see” in the spirit say they can see the unseen realm with their natural eyes just like they would look at you or me. Blake Healy in his book, The Veil, describes his sight that way. For me, I “see” things in my mind while my natural eyes are looking at the location where I sense a presence. It’s like I’m seeing in my mind the exact same picture I see with my natural eyes except there is an added element there, such as an angel. I learned this (or was strengthened in it) through Gary Oates’ teaching called “Open My Eyes, Lord”. Both of these materials are listed on the Resources tab above. In Blake’s book, he says he encourages people to increase their perception through whatever way they normally use to “hear” from God. Is it through pictures in their mind or a feeling or hearing words in their thoughts? Whichever way God speaks to them is a sense they have learned to trust, so he says that’s a good place to start when learning to sense the unseen realm. His book has exercises to help you “practice”.

I don’t often hear things, but I have met people who do. Touch is the one I guess I relate to the most – I “feel” things often, everywhere I go. I am also very sensitive to the presence of the Lord and often “feel” His presence. Taste and smell are the most unusual ones – not too many people mention these. I have smelled anointing oil in a service that was thick with the Presence of the Holy Spirit. I have read of people who get a bad “taste” in their mouth when certain demonic spirits are nearby. I’ve never experienced that one, have you?

One other thing I realized recently – I think we sense things differently in our spirit versus in our soul. For instance, my soul can easily detect anything that is evil or unclean. And it usually freaks me out – my soul doesn’t know what to do with the information. However, my spirit does know what to do – so I have to remember to consciously choose to connect with my spirit and then use my authority to remove anything evil that’s bothering me (in my home or near me in a public place).

I also have very sensitive discernment when it comes to dealing with people. That’s a gift in my spirit. When I look in someone’s eyes, 9 times out of 10 I can see their soul. My gift is emotional healing so I see clearly their soul wounds. I can often also see their gifting or original design from the Father. Sometimes I can also discern if there are evil spirits oppressing the person. As you can imagine, I have to be very cautious not to reveal all this information on my face when I’m introduced to someone I’ve never met. I get it all pretty quickly. Being in a party full of people can sometimes be pretty overwhelming to my senses, receiving all this information at once.

So, how do you sense the unseen realm? As I shared on another post, what helped me was finding someone who sensed things using a different method than I did. We would go places and share what we were each aware of. By comparing notes, we grew exponentially both in confidence and in accuracy in being able to identify what we were experiencing. So if you naturally “see” in the unseen realm, go find someone who “feels” and vice versa. You’ll be glad you did.

  1. neophyte psychic

Hello! I liked this post very much as I am just learning about these things now. I also have been experiencing similar things since I was a child but I tended to “rationalize” it or just take it for granted. Not anymore. What you’re describing up there sound like “the clairs”: clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience and claircognizance. Those are for: seeing, hearing, feeling and knowing. I think they also exist for smell and taste but I’m not sure what they’re called. I have always had the last 3 very strong since I was a child, but now I’ve started meditating and my now clairvoyance is strong too.

You asked if anyone has smelled anything that wasn’t there. I have! πŸ™‚ A few times in my life I would suddenly smell roses. It was very strong and exquisite, even if I was in a place where there were no flowers or plants at all, and I was alone so it wasn’t anyone’s perfume. I learned much later that smelling roses (and possibly other beautiful fragrances for no logical reason) means that an angel is nearby! Isn’t that wonderful! I was so happy to discover that. πŸ™‚

Thank you for the interesting post!

    • Wow – how cool to smell roses! That’s very unique. I like that. πŸ™‚

Thanks for sharing – I’ve never heard that about angels, but it makes sense, doesn’t it? And it sounds cool – to smell an angel. πŸ™‚

  2. I love the Gift of discerning of spirits and desire to operate more fully in it but I just thought Id mention about smelling in the spirit. As I was about to walk into my bedroom one night I suddenly caught this strong smell of sulfur and immediately recognized it as a demonic presence. Later on while i was asleep i had a dream that three demons with long hooded robes were standing in my doorway, talking amongst themselves about what they desired to do to me, right where i smelled them. Ever since i can remember Ive experienced the spirit realm, many times and in multiple ways. I just chalked it up to ghost before i knew any better. The only thing Ive yet to experience is taste, unless i have and didnt recognize it for what it was. May you continue to grow in grace and increasing in your gifts. Shalom.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience, Daniel. Sulfur is often the smell people associate with demons or an evil presence. In fact, the expression “fire and brimstone” from the Bible means “fire and sulfur” – brimstone is the stone where sulfur comes from. Rev 20:10 “the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone….” so smelling sulfur and sensing evil makes sense.

Keep practicing your gift of discernment – it gets stronger/sharper the more you use it. Hebrews 5:14 “those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Exercise pays off πŸ™‚ There’s some books in the Resources tab above that offer exercises so you can practice.

  3. This morning as I was waking up, I could smell oil. I have always wanted to smell something in the spiritual realm and especially oil. From time to time over the years, I have smelled flowers or a beautiful perfume fragrance. After I woke up and smelled the oil, I saw a text from my mom that told me that my grandmother had gone home to Jesus about an hour and a half before. I think that I had read somewhere that smelling oil was an angel pouring out an anointing over us. Smelling the oil and then reading that my grandmother had passed, I wonder if those two circumstances had anything to do with each other? Thank you for any replies. : )

    • Robin, thank you for your comment and question. I am sorry for the passing of your grandmother. It does seem related – smelling the oil and her passing. I am not sure what it means. I encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit, “What does the oil mean?” There could be many meanings of the symbolism of oil. Perhaps the Lord is passing on to you the anointing that was on your grandmother’s life? It is definitely a gift of some sort – smelling the oil and receiving the message of her passing is not a coincidence. If you ask the Lord, I am sure He will show you what it means. πŸ™‚

Thank you for sharing your experience. May the Lord comfort you with His presence as you and your family say goodbye to your grandmother. She must be so happy in her new home! πŸ™‚ Can you “see” her there?

  4. Does anyone find that with their gifts comes greater attacks by the enemy than most other christians experience? Im definitely in the wilderness for a season. Ive been delivered from soooo many things but still need deliverance as I have warfare every night when I close my eyes. I love (most of the time)all my gifts but dont have understanding of them yet. Im praying to be moved to meat! Thank you for this article. God bless

    • Tera, thank you for your comment. I’m glad you liked the article. Yes, it may feel like some of us experience more attacks from the enemy than others. Especially if you have the gift of discernment – you will be much more aware of attacks because you can sense the enemy. Maybe other people are attacked and just don’t realize it? Nighttime is a common time to be attacked because you are vulnerable while asleep. It is also the time when many people who practice witchcraft perform their rituals – this releases more demonic activity, I think. You may want to try praying some of the prayers mentioned in this article: https://supernaturaldiscernment.com/2013/04/19/protection/.

Sometimes I think that the attacks are meant to make us stronger – you are certainly getting an education in what the darkness can do. This will give you greater authority – you’re not just guessing, you actually have experience. Also, the more healed you get on the inside of fear and emotional pain, the less the attacks will come and when they do come, they won’t bother you so much. For emotional healing, I recommend the exercises in this book: http://destinysfreedom.com/?page_id=61. They really helped me. I’m no longer afraid of attacks when they come – they are annoying, but they don’t freak me out anymore.

Thanks for stopping by, Tera. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me. I am available as a support or mentor to anyone looking for answers about this realm. I don’t know it all, but I love to listen and help people not feel “crazy” for their weird experiences. God bless you! πŸ™‚

  5. Thank you for your response. I checked out both links and will def be taking you up on your offer for support! It seems the more I know and serve God the more he lets me fight these battles alone, like I said I think Im in my swason of testin. It will be NICE to talk to someone else who ‘see’s’ like me and has similar gifts. I thank you again for your response.

  6. I found this article because of something specific I googled and this article specifically says this doesn’t happen often. So this has happened a handful of times to me – when someone is doing something in the name of God and my discernment kicks in and says it is very much not of God, I get a sulfur taste in my mouth and become nauseated. (I obviously have never eaten sulfur but you could imagine what something taste like by its smell.) I was looking it up because I don’t share my spiritual gifts often – I don’t attend a church that would be considered charismatic or prophetic or anything like that. So I tend to keep a lot of things to myself.

I also connected with so many things you wrote about and I have had random people come up to me and ask me things that I didn’t even know what they were. Two people have asked me if I was a Seer and a handful of people over my life time have asked me if I was a mystic. But I have had people in my faith tell me those things are bad and I shouldn’t look into them. I was wondering if there are people who work with people who have these gifts, to develop them. Like prophecy, dreams, visions, physical stuff happening. Or are we just on our own? Because it seems like their are other people who tap into their faith as deeply as I do, I just can’t seem to find them.

Also this is really hard for me to admit on a public forum.

    • Thank you so much for posting your comment – that took courage. I admire that. I have heard of people getting a bad taste in their mouth spiritually. Sulfur sounds awful – I feel for you. I’m glad you connected with many of the things written here – chances are, you have a strong gift of discernment. Yes, there are people who train others in their gifts. I train people with discernment. There are others who can train you in how to interpret dreams or visions, etc.

I want to encourage you – you are NOT alone. Your primary teacher is the Holy Spirit, who you have inside of you. He will teach you everything you need to know – and sometimes He uses people. πŸ™‚

You may want to check out some of the training in the Resources tab on this website – I list several books, CDs, etc that have helped me learn. I will also send you an email to discuss other training opportunities with you.

Again, thank you for having the courage to post your experience on a public forum. I know how hard that can be. God bless you! πŸ™‚

  7. I was so excited when I first read this post about the 5 senses. I didnt know about them until my son told me about the 5 senses and that God had given me the gift of smell. All I knew God gave me visions and dreams but my story is about smell. I have been living in my home for over 6 years now and I have always smelled an old man smell in one of my bedrooms. I really never knew what that was but it bothered me. One day I walked in the room and my stomach just turned from the strong smell. I started to deep clean – my son walks in the room and I ask him, Do you smell something bad? He says, No, I don’t smell anything. It was at that point I really knew what I smelled all of this time. Sure enough I had found out that a old man had passed on in that room. This is my story and my spiritual gift. Thanks for being there for us so we can share and come together.

  8. I have so many thoughts!

First, I have had had all five senses in the spirit realm with the “knowing” always being the strongest. God has spoken to me through dreams many times and also a few visions. There is very little information out there that isn’t secular in nature about these things. I veer quickly away as they have a pretty dark or bad vibe coming from them though they try to project light, healing and understanding. False, false, false. I don’t have anyone that knows about this in my life but I do have the Holy Spirit. Until recently, i never thought to ask him to help me grow and learn or to send anyone that could build on my knowledge to be effective for God’s kingdom. I was kind of like, whoa, why haven’t I thought of that since learning the little I have about why I’m so different?

I think I tend to miss signs and not ask for information when I should. Recently, for about two weeks I kept ruminating or daydreaming about being in a car crash. It was forefront on my mind and I kept dismissing it and sometimes wondering why it wouldn’t leave. This Monday in the early morning after dropping someone off to work my son said, “I don’t want to get in a crash and lose the van.” I immediately started praying and telling him that we’ll be fine. Earlier this afternoon I went to the grocery with my son and it was snowing huge flakes. I saw someone walking and prayed for them and anyone else who has to walk in the cold weather because I did for years without a vehicle. Right at the end of my prayer I felt the Holy Spirit press upon me, “Like you do?” I was like, why do I need to be warm? I have a vehicle, though it’s really old and has issues, it gets me around. It kind of hit me though.

Later, on the way home from the grocery I was slowing down and turning like normal when it felt like the brakes locked up and I slid into a concrete median that was about six inches high and it dented the front left rim and popped the back left tire. I quickly made sure my son was ok and I pulled to the side of the road and got out to see the damage. I know God intervened because I was able to drive it just far enough to not damage the rim of the flat tire, have help to get the front tire replaced and the balloon on the back until tomorrow when there will be money to replace it as well.

At first, I was worried because I’m not in a good situation right now and without the van, I will be homeless again. I started to get emotional but it also caused my son to start so I stopped and assured him we’d be ok. He asked me if the “van was sad?” and later after it getting semi fixed if it was “happy?” I’m thankful for so many things and that it was not very serious. I haven’t asked the Holy Spirit what that was for, but I believe it’s because I pushed back an issue that needed fixing and he let a small thing happen so I will prevent a larger one from happening by making the issue a priority. I think I need to get better at listening to the signs he gives me and spend more time asking what they are for. I want to always lean on the LORD and not my own understanding and I think this is a good example in my life that I have slacked and need to get to a better place.

I love this blog and the space to share our experiences freely. Thank you so much!

    • You’re welcome! Thank you for sharing your story – I am so glad you were not injured in that accident! Yes, it’s very important to be listening carefully to the Holy Spirit – pause and ask Him for help whenever you need it. It’s a great habit to develop and can really save your life! πŸ™‚

  9. Hi there. I am very interested in hearing more about your journey and gifts with God. A friend and I have started to put together a podcast and will be doing Instagram discussions about spiritual warfare, God and basically the Truth of our Savior. I would love to have you as a guest, to hear your views on topics we will discuss when we begin our channel. People don’t realize how awesome the truth actually is – they just see it through the church’s “forced perception”. Reading this post about the 5 senses and gifts, I realized you are in God’s family. And I felt the need to connect to you. My name is Tarryn Lundy and we are from South Africa. I would love to hear back from you.

  10. what does the smell of smoke mean?

    • Ladypalm, thank you for your question. I don’t know what the smell of smoke means. I will leave your comment posted here – perhaps someone else will have experience with this. I would ask, “Holy Spirit, what does the smell of smoke mean?” and see what insight comes to you. If God wants you to know, He will show you. If not, then you don’t have to worry about what it means. Most of these things are on a “need to know” basis – if you need to know, He’ll show you! πŸ™‚

    • Hi Ladypalm,
I sometimes smell smoke as if someone had lit a cigarette in the house (my husband and I are non smokers and are the only two who live in our home). I tend to associate that smell with my mother. My family has always struggled with a spirit of depression and I find in my own personal life, when I tend to smell cigarette smoke in my space, I feel like I’ve been battling that spirit of depression. This may not be the answer you were looking for, however, this is my own experience. I am one who has been given the gift of smelling in the spirit and can always tell when an evil or demonic spirit is around. When I smell these spirits, I immediately take authority of my home and space and in Jesus name command they leave. Once I invoke the name of Jesus, those stinky spirits don’t stay around too long. God bless!

  11. God bless you.
I have smelled a wonderful scent of flowers before and I believe it’s because an angel is nearby . Or I could smell something unpleasant like something ‘ rotting’, I believe that some witchcraft may be happening nearby that certain location.
I can also feel when I’m around demonic activity for example I would feel I have a very intense migraine.
I was wondering if anyone has felt ,nausea,or sick to their stomach? For example before I was a born again Christian, I used to see horror films ( I don’t feel proud about that) or hear horrible news of a murder on Tv I would feel nauseous or have a headache. I wonder if I was getting attacked by the enemy.
Although I have more than five years experiencing this, I’m still new to this . I was hoping one of you guys can help me figure that out.
I hope everyone has a good day.

    • Giselle, thank you for sharing your experiences. I have experienced nausea when there is witchcraft and I’ve heard others say that too. I have also experienced headaches with witchcraft, particularly if a storm is bringing in a lot of oppression with it. Thankfully, with a lot of healing and deliverance, I don’t experience the headaches anymore. I hope this is helpful – both of these symptoms seem related to witchcraft, though I don’t know why. Thank you again for posting your comment and question! God bless you. πŸ™‚
